Weight management

Richmond Animal Hospital Weight Watchers

Obesity in dogs and cats is far too common a problem and is a significant health concern. Getting our companion animal family members to loose weight is no small feat. Since opening in Feb 2006, 28 patients have lost 143 lbs. and counting! With each patient being different, this has been accomplished in a number of ways

  • decreasing diet intake
  • changing diet types
  • cutting back or eliminating treats
  • supplementing with fruits or vegetables (with the exception of grapes, raisins and onions)
  • regular exercise

In each case, recommendations were made following consultation and the weight loss was monitored with regular (usually monthly) weigh ins.

Soto those dedicated owners congratulations for making your furry four legged family member healthier!

Nutrition

We recommend feeding a premium quality puppy food. Large breed puppies have unique requirements and should be fed a large breed puppy food. (link to info explaining why?) Here are links to available veterinary brands of dog foods.
